We know that the skills taught in the EA’s staff development classes are very well rounded and directly applicable to the issues we face as an employer. For staff training and education, we look to The EA first, and really don’t see any need to look anywhere else. We assign nurses to be “in charge” each shift, which requires assigning tasks, directing work, and problem solving. They essentially are leaders for their team, without the supervisory title. We have our charge nurses attend The EA’s seminar on Leading Without Formal Authority, which gives them the skills and information they need to fulfill this leadership role with confidence. We also have a company-wide initiative to ensure that our staff is fully trained in the area of respect and customer service, not only to our patients and families, but to each other as well. Our staff who have gone through the EA’s seminars have given really good feedback regarding the content as well as the instructors, all of whom are industry experts.

Our team had the opportunity to attend the EA’s annual Leadership Conference this summer. The EA assembled a diverse group of distinguished presenters including Kevin Sauder, president of Sauder Woodworking, and Coach Lloyd Carr from the University of Michigan. Each presenter shared their thoughts on leadership from a variety of perspectives, and gave our managers valuable insights into how they can continue to engage their own teams here at Spangler Candy. In addition to top-level speakers, we’ve found that EA conferences such as this one also provide our team members the chance to interact and network with their peers from other organizations which promotes learning and growth on a whole other level aside from the planned content of the event.
