We worked with the EA to design and implement a series of onsite training sessions for our front line managers and supervisors. I appreciated their focus on the sustainability of the learning, which included immediate reflection on the material at the end of the sessions, but also ‘homework’ that was assigned which gave participants a chance to practice what they learned. The EA trainers delivered content in engaging, interactive and effective ways, resulting in very positive responses from participants. They were also highly knowledgeable on the topics discussed. Like most organizations our size, Supervisors and Managers are promoted based on their functional job knowledge and expertise. Realistically that has nothing to with becoming a successful manager or supervisor and we found they were frequently woefully unprepared for the challenges of their new roles. Difficult conversations were not happening, and if they did, they did not go well. Lack of accountability had our managers and supervisors working harder than ever. They needed help!
Last summer we partnered with the Employer’s Association and put together the Cutting Edge Supervisory Skills Academy, a 14 week program, to provide much needed coaching on the skills necessary to be an effective leader and get everyone singing from the same hymnal. In it we covered, Leadership, Communication, Change Management, Conflict Resolution, Compliance, Team Building, Problem Solving and a host of other relevant topics. Upon completion we found our supervisors and manages were more comfortable in their roles and were much more consistent in their management styles.
Dave Tippet, our instructor, fostered participation to bring out real life examples which we used in our discussions to practice developing solutions. Dave kept a fast but appropriate pace and interjected exercises to reinforce the topics.
I would highly recommend the Employer’s Association and this training to any organization the values promoting from within and needs to develop strong capable leaders.
