The Power of Pink
Written by: Mandy Tegtmeyer, Wellness Consultant, The Employers’ Association
Even if pink is not your color, you should consider wearing it throughout October to show your support for breast cancer awareness. Nearly everyone has been affected by breast cancer in one way or another. In 2024, more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer. But there is hope. There have been many advancements in early detection methods and the research continues. When caught in the early stages, the 5-year survival rate of breast cancer is 99%.
Although we cannot eliminate the risk of developing breast cancer, there are ways in which we can reduce our risk or help those we love to reduce their risk. Research shows that lifestyle changes can lower the chances of getting breast cancer, even in people at high risk due to genetic factors. For example:
- Limit or stay away from alcohol.
- Stay at a healthy weight.
- Get active.
- Quit smoking.
- Breastfeed.
- Limit hormone therapy after menopause.
- Conduct monthly self-breast exams.
- Have annual mammograms.
Until there is a cure, we must be steadfast in the fight to end breast cancer. For more information or to donate, click the links below.
