Just before her involvement in the programs she had been told by her physician that she was overweight, borderline diabetic and needed medication to manage her high cholesterol.
At Sunset Retirement Communities we have had wellness initiatives for several years, but it wasn’t until the last four that we have seen our employees start to respond. We began really focusing on our efforts and utilizing the Employers’ Association better. Each year as we work with our EA Wellness Consultant we have seen increased participation in programs.
Some of the key things they have helped us get started is our points earning program, educational materials and quizzes for employees that do not have time to attend meetings, weight loss challenges and smoking cessation classes. Also with help from the Employers’ Association we have been able to meet the goals we set with our insurance company to keep our premium costs down (even lowered one year!).
Overall, my most proud moment was when an employee came to me to say how thankful she was for all we were doing to help her improve her health. Just before her involvement in the programs she had been told by her physician that she was overweight, borderline diabetic and needed medication to manage her high cholesterol. Since then her blood sugar and cholesterol are consistently in normal range. She no longer needs to have regular blood sugars taken and is not taking cholesterol medication. She has lost significant weight and is feeling better than she has in years!
