Research shows that workplace incivility is on the rise and is damaging the workplace. Politeness and respect seem to be on a downward spiral. The lack of respect, restraint, and responsibility have taken a back seat to rudeness, frankness, and irresponsible behavior.

As the political climate has become increasingly volatile and we see an increase in people’s willingness to communicate and air their thoughts and grievances on social media, without thought of impact or consequence, uncivil behaviors have infected the work environment.

Consider these examples of uncivil behavior: teammates get into a shouting match in their workspace area, a co-worker sends rude emails, someone “forgets” to share credit for a collaborative work, or someone speaks in a condescending tone. These actions may seem “normal” or may be accepted as “just the way it is” in your workplace but they do not have to be.

Using the latest book, Mastering Civility: A Manifesto for the Workplace, by Christine Porath, Professor/Researcher at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, we will discuss why civility makes for a better workplace.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Develop an understanding of what is workplace civility
  • Examine the effects and consequences of workplace incivility
  • Identify ways human resource professionals and other leaders can encourage and foster a culture of respect and civility in their workplace
