About this Program:

Research shows that workplace incivility is on the rise and is damaging the workplace. Politeness and respect seem to be on a downward spiral. The lack of respect, restraint, and responsibility have taken a back seat to rudeness, frankness, and irresponsible behavior.
As the political climate becomes increasingly unstable and social media platforms entice people to communicate and air their thoughts and grievances around the clock, uncivil behaviors have infected the work environment.
Consider these examples of uncivil behavior: a co-worker sends blunt or terse emails, someone does not refill the office coffeemaker or printer, or an employee says “hello” to a coworker, and the coworker does not respond in kind. These actions may seem “normal” or may be accepted as “just the way it is” in your workplace but they do not have to be.
Using the latest book, Mastering Civility: A Manifesto for the Workplace, by Christine Porath, Professor/Researcher at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, we will discuss why civility makes for a better workplace.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define workplace civility
  • Examine the effects and consequences of workplace incivility
  • Identify ways Leaders can encourage and foster a culture of respect and civility in their workplace
